How to pick the best family hotel in London

Table of Contents

The above map details the neighbourhoods listed below:

Choosing where to stay in London with kids depends on several factors: location, how much space you need, cost and availability / time of year.

Location

Choosing where to stay depends a lot on who is travelling with you. If you’re visiting with toddlers, for example, it’s worth staying in a central location near the main sights and parks so you don’t have to travel too far every day. Having a centrally located hotel also means you can head back to the room for some downtime if your kids start to feel tire.

Teenagers on the other hand, will love neighbourhoods such as Camden and Shoreditch. These are a little cooler and a little edgier than some of the central London neighbourhoods (but in an Instagram-friendly way rather than a dangerous way!).

Being a short distance from a tube station is a big plus point and will make getting around London that much quicker and easier.

Budget

There are some incredible family-friendly hotels in London but they can be expensive. Some of the best hotels come with dedicated kids’ concierges, afternoon tea, design-led family rooms, swimming pools, and more.

At the other end of the scale, there are also some excellent value hotels, such as the Premier Inn chain, that might not enjoy the same kind of trimmings as their 5 star counterparts but offer convenient locations, family rooms and wallet-friendly prices.

If you are staying for longer than four nights on your family getaway then you may want to consider renting a serviced apartment. Having home comforts such as a fully-equipped kitchen and a washing machine can make travelling with kids that bit easier.

Space

Finding hotels that sleep families larger than four can be tricky in London. Unlike places such as the U.S. where you can find large hotel rooms with two king-size beds and space for an extra bed, London hotel rooms tend to sleep four people maximum.

There are, of course, exceptions but if you are a larger family – or travelling with taller teens who need more space – then you may want to consider renting an apartment. I’m a fan of Plum Guide who curate their selection of holiday homes in chosen destinations.

Availability

Remember that if your family vacation is planned for peak months such as October half-term, Christmas and summer then be aware that prices will be higher and availability lower. Make sure you book well in advance

Camden Town, London is a fun neighbourhood for teens

Camden

Camden Town, otherwise known as Camden, is located in the north-west of London. It’s a bit busier, a bit grittier and a bit noisier than some of the other London neighbourhoods listed here but it’s also a lot of fun and a great option if you are visiting London with older children or teens.

Camden is famous for its live music scene (the Dublin Castle helped launch the careers of Blur and Amy Winehouse) and its market. Held at Camden Stables, the market is home to hundreds of small businesses selling everything from clothing and jewellery to music posters, homewares and knick knacks. Also worth visiting is KERB Camden Market, home to 35 different food stalls.

This community is a great choice for a family holiday in London; you are still in close proximity to the city centre but away from the crowds. It’s also a good choice if you want to be near Camden but not right in the heart of the action.

Hampstead Heath in Hampstead is a fantastic place for families.

Hampstead

One of my favourite neighbrouhods in London is Hampstead. Located in north London, Hampstead feels more like a small country village than a London neighbourhood handily located in Zone 2. The neighbourhood is filled with narrow lanes, historic houses, shops and Hampstead Heath. The much-loved heath is a large expanse of woodland, meadows and playing fields along with its three swimming ponds.

Family Hotels in Hampstead

La Gaffe

This award-winning family-run guesthouse has been welcoming guests (including the Beatles!) since the 1960s and is a great option for families. Family Hotels in Shoreditch

The Courthouse Hotel

One of the best family hotels in London, the Courthouse Hotel sits in a building that was once the Old Street Magistrates Court and police station; infamous London gangsters the Kray twins were once held here. 1. Nell (Pigeon Pair and Me)

What a helpful feature! London can be overwhelming for visitors – I’ve lived here for 20 years, and even I get confused by some areas. So it’s really useful to have it all laid out like this.

    1. I know what you mean, it’s very easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of neighbourhoods in London! Thank you so much 🙂

  2. This is an AMAZING guide Katja! I grew up in NW London but moved away before I had my girls and I’ve not taken them to London yet. I’m desperate to but have been overwhelmed with trying to figure out where to stay. We like self catering places so I love that you’ve included places that have kitchenettes and places that cater for larger families. Bookmarking this so that when we do head down there I can pick the best place for us to stay. Thank you!

    1. Thank you so much! I hope you bring your girls to London soon, we’re really loving exploring the city with kids. There’s so much to do!
